Letter sent to the Mayor about lack of buses in Teversham village – 14th November 2024
As a Parish Council we are committed to improving public transport for residents in Teversham. We have advocated for better bus services over a number of years.
Teversham village is located on the outskirts of Cambridge but is constantly ignored by all bus reforms. We understand Teversham village is missing out, once again, on the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA) improvements to the bus network across the county.
Teversham village should be part of these plans for improvements to the bus network. This service would be transformative for the village, opening up a wide range of journey opportunities that currently can only be made by car.
We are consistently bypassed by frequent bus services, serving our neighbouring parish of Fulbourn and Cherry Hinton. Some of the buses that currently serve Fulbourn and/or Tesco could have comparatively simple (and short) route changes in order to serve the village.
We currently have:
• 16a, Monday to Friday, once a day (Marshalls Close at 0749; returns at 1721 serving Long Road Sixth Form College and Addenbrooke’s Hospital).
• The Park & Ride 2, Monday to Saturday, (Marshalls Close at 0722 (0822 Sats); returns at 1800 via Newmarket Road Park and Ride).
• 18 Tuesdays to Newmarket (Marshalls Close at 0950 to Newmarket P&R, then back to Marshalls Close for 10.05 to Newmarket then returns 1410)
This is not enough for our village.
This leaves village residents totally reliant on access to private cars, with the associated high running costs (monetary and environmental), or journeys by taxi.
An improved bus service could:
• Help our young people be more independent, by providing better access to schools and colleges.
• Open up better access to quality employment opportunities.
• Support our local economy by providing access to local businesses along the route.
• Provide access to local community facilities, including leisure facilities, healthcare and hospital services.
• Support residents concerned about their environmental impact to reduce their car ownership.
• Better connect Teversham to other nearby communities, opening up new opportunities to socialise or take up new hobbies, helping to tackle loneliness and isolation in our community.
We look forward to hearing from you and some consideration given to the needs of the residents of Teversham village.
